How Do Solar Lights Work

Solar lighting uses solar panels to absorb solar radiation during the daytime and converts it to electrical energy. It is stored in the battery bank through a charge and discharge controller. At night, when the daylight gradually decreases to about 10lux and the solar panel open circuit voltage is about 4.5V, the controller shall detect this voltage value and then direct the battery to discharge and power the led bulb light source to realize functional lighting.

Batteries

There are two main types of batteries for solar-powered lights, lead-acid batteries, and lithium batteries.

The advantages of lead-acid batteries are that they have been used in solar lighting for the longest time, and are more stable and cost-effective. The disadvantage is that the lead-acid battery is large in size and can generate serious environmental pollution during production, and its price fluctuation is big due to the effect of the lead cost.

The advantage of lithium batteries is that under the same capacity, their volume and weight are smaller than lead-acid batteries, the energy density is bigger, and its use is more flexible. The disadvantage is that its price is higher compared with a lead-acid battery. However, with the technical development and increasing high acceptance in the market, the lithium battery cost has gradually decreased and becomes the main battery type used in solar lighting.

Controller

The controller mainly plays the role of charge/discharge control and management in the solar lighting system. During the daytime, the solar panel generates electricity and charge to the battery through the controller. At night, the battery of the solar lights is discharged through the controller to supply power to the light source for lighting. When the rainy days are too long, if the battery voltage drops below the controller preset battery lack-of-power voltage, the controller shall cut off the battery power supply. In addition, the controller has an intelligent power mode which can adjust the light source brightness based on battery surplus capacity for energy-saving purposes and can extend lighting time to the maximum in continuous rainy/cloudy conditions.
