2,2,4-Trimethylpentane
Isooctane is a standard substance for testing the anti-knock performance of gasoline. The octane numbers of isooctane and heptane are specified as 100 and 0 respectively. If the anti-knock performance of a gasoline sample in a single-cylinder engine is equivalent to that of an isooctane-heptane mixture of a certain composition under specified test conditions, the octane number of the sample is equal to the volume percentage of isooctane in the standard fuel. Gasoline with good anti-knock performance has a high octane number.
