MOTS-c is a peptide hormone encoded in the mitochondrial genome. It regulates metabolic homeostasis and enhances physical performance. It is a mitochondria-derived peptide (MDP) that promotes biosynthesis of the endogenous AMP analog AICAR and consequently AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK).
