Methyl formate is a widely used low-boiling solvent. It can be directly used as an insecticide, fungicide, and fumigant for treating grains, fruits, dried fruits, and tobacco. It is often used as an intermediate in medicine, pesticides, and organic synthesis, and a solvent for cellulose acetate. It is used to produce dimethylamide, dimethyl formate, oxalic acid, diphosgene, carbon-one chemical intermediates, and non-toxic carbonylation reagents.
