Le bois d'Agar dont on tire l'huile essentielle d'Agarwood, est communément appelé pour cette raison le « Bois des Dieux ». Il est considéré comme une manifestation divine susceptible de purifier le corps et l'esprit.
L'huile essentielle d'Agarwood fut un élément entrant dans les pharmacopées traditionnelles chinoise et coréenne.
Elle a été utilisée traditionnellement pour le traitement des douleurs articulaires, des affections inflammatoires et des troubles de l'estomac mais aussi comme sédatif ou léger stimulant.
Pour obtenir la plus précieuse des huiles essentielles, on immerge le bois pilé en petits morceaux ou réduit en poudre dans l'eau puis on laisse fermenter. Le mélange est ensuite transféré dans des alambics et chauffé à la vapeur. On estime de 10 à 15 kg la quantité de bois nécessaire pour obtenir 100 ml d'huile essentielle.
