Le laser diode est un laser évoluant dans la lumière invisible. Le rayon est entre 800nm en fonction des modèles et connait un chromophore principal: la mélanine. Le poil étant très chargé en mélanine, il constitue une cible de choix pour cette longueur d'onde. La concentration de la lumière dans la chromophore provoque une conversion de la lumière en chaleur dans le follicule et à sa base. La chaleur produite est proche des 80°, ce qui autorise une destruction du poil et de ses zones germinatives. Le transport de la chaleur produite par le laser aboutit un une nécrose de coagulagion définitive de la base du poil au niveau où les cellules germinatives assurent son renouvellement.
