Full adhesion is achieved when the surface of the object to which the magnet is attached is smooth and of sufficient thickness, and when the pot magnet is in perfect flush contact.

Pot magnets lose most of their adhesion when they are only half a millimeter away from a ferromagnetic surface. This property is more pronounced with pot magnets than with other ferrite magnets and NdFeB magnets.

Flash rust may appear on steel pots when used outdoors, but this does not affect the function of the magnet.
